A classic and traditional bush style lodge, Malewane Lodge at Royal Malewane was the original Biden family holiday home, converted to become the first luxury lodge in The Royal Portfolio collection. Brimming with old world elegance, it was designed and decorated to be an elegant refuge in the heart of the bush. Spacious private decks complete with crystal-clear pools allow you to make the most of the surrounding wild beauty and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine. The best safari moments are not as predictable as the dawn and dusk of day ... like the surprise presence of elephants at your private plunge pool, paying you a gentle visit.
Watch elephants drink from the comfort of our dining deck, On the River, stunning river setting with flood-lit waterhole right in front of the deck. Frequent visits by herds of elephant. Caters equally for both couples and families. Safari spa, gym and kids club & activities are additional features.
Visitors experience meaningful and often life-changing encounters with wildlife replacing bustling city life with the tranquil sounds and splendour of untamed nature. Time slows down as your body adjusts to the natural rhythms of the African bush. The Greater Kruger refers to the Kruger National Park itself as well as the private game reserves on its Western border such as the Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Manyeleti and Thornybush Private Game Reserve.
The Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and one of the world’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Approximately the same size as Israel or Wales, it covers some 19,485 square kilometres offering a rich diversity of ecosystems that support over 145 mammal species including Lions, Leopards, Buffalos, Elephants and Black Rhinos that make up Africa’s Big 5 and over 500 bird species.
Drive in the Wild – witness Africa’s abundant wildlife on twice daily game drives with the most qualified guiding team in Africa. Go in search of Africa’s wildlife on game drives with Guides and Trackers who live and breathe this wild environment. The aromas of the bush, the sunsets that make you stop and look, and the thrill you get from following the Big 5 on the hunt will stay with you long after your leave.
Bush Walks & Walking Trails – a safari on foot - activate all your senses on a guided Bush Walk and discover a world in which each rustle, scent and broken twig has a story to tell. Exhilarating and detail-focused, a guided walk through our Greater Kruger territory will get you up close with creatures both great and small and introduce you to the fascinating workings of our African ecosystem. This is also an opportunity to encounter the Big 5 on foot.
Helicopter Patrol Flight – Africa from the Air - viewing the reserve from above offers a unique perspective on the landscape and what it takes to keep the wildlife safe. Burst through the clouds in a helicopter and emerge on the other side to a flooring view of the world’s largest green canyon. Out one window is the savannah of the Greater Kruger, and out the other is the rise of the Drakensberg mountain range.
Cruise the Blyde Canyon - Take in the view of one of the world’s largest canyons from the bottom up in a boat cruise on Blyde Dam. This is an opportunity for bird-watching, hippo-gazing, and admiring the sheer diversity of the natural world surrounding Royal Malewane.
Photographic SAfaris – Photography takes patience and dedication. Our Guides are passionate photographers and have an insight into wildlife that is key to anticipating movement and behaviour – the recipe for the perfect photograph.
Birding SAfaris – You’ll leave your safari with a renewed sense of appreciation for these colourful members of our world. Our Guides have earned the country’s top qualifications in birding, so if you’ve got a bird bucket list to work on, you’re in the right place.
Celebrations - Using a golden thread of luxury, Royal Malewane sews together special celebrations in an African paradise. From milestone birthdays to surprise proposals and secret elopements, we celebrate love in a place that ignites fire in our hearts.
Conservation Activities – Through specially curated activities, we invite you to get a close look at endangered species and work with experts on the ground. We get to share the unique experience of helping conservationists perform life-saving work for wild animals.
Most people find themselves on safari looking for a certain level of healing, reconnection, nourishment for the soul. Our luxury spas, yoga studios, meditation spaces, and gyms create space for both mental and physical wellness and bring a therapeutic essence to your stay.
The award winning Waters of Royal Malewane Bush Spa located at Malewane Lodge is a magical and tranquil space in complete harmony with the natural surroundings. Enjoy a relaxing massage or a pampering beauty treatment. For a more romantic experience, couples can enjoy the Moroccan sunken baths.
If you’ve come to Africa to feel nature’s pulse, this is an ideal way of tuning your body to the right frequency. Reflections Spa has three treatment rooms (one of the rooms is a double) and a Hammam – a hot steam bath followed by a massage. There is also a yoga room and gym at Waterside.
When you choose a safari destination, it’s the guiding team that makes the difference to the memories you’ll take home with you. By tapping into a wealth of knowledge and generations of innate wildlife experience, our guests are in the capable hands of passionate people whose levels of expertise makes them the best in their field.
Game drives form the basic rhythm of the day on safari. You’ll find – like us – that to be out in the fresh air as the sun rises and sets is to be realigned with a pattern of deep and ancient significance. On a game drive, your senses sharpen and your excitement grows as you draw close to some of the planet’s most remarkable animals, including the species in the Big 5, which are the most anticipated and exciting animals to get close to.
Our specialised game drive vehicles ensure that your wildlife viewing experience is as good as it gets. The spaciousness and added extras of our top-of-the-range cruisers afford ample space for photographic equipment and luxurious comfort.
Your Tracker has a seat right at the front of the vehicle so that their eyes hit the fresh tracks first. You’ll be blown away by how their trained vision and years of experience allow them to see signs and markings in the sand at a speed.
Royal Malewane’s guiding team has earned the right to be called the best qualified guiding team in Africa thanks to their impressive collection of high-level FGASA qualifications. Together, our guiding team has over 350 years of experience in the African bush. That’s a testament to their passion, knowledge, and skill. You’re in the most capable hands for a complete safari experience at Royal Malewane.
This is a low risk Malaria area, especially in the winter months
